Listening Lunch Series: Listening Filters Part 1-The Contents of Our Own Minds
Have you ever found yourself listening to a friend or colleague when suddenly they ask you a question and you realize you have spent the last 5 minutes thinking about what you need to pick up at the grocery store later? You fumble around searching for the lost thread but finally admit “Sorry, I wasn’t listening”… or you fake it.
Well, there’s good news-you’re human! We all have tons of thoughts running through our minds at every moment of the day which makes it difficult to be present and truly focus on who and what is right in front of us. Our inability to stay focused is worsened by a culture that values productivity and multitasking, rather than deep connection and living in the present moment. But, there are some simple tools and techniques that you can use to cultivate awareness and keep yourself focused and listening in the moment. In this online session, we’ll talk about the ways our minds distract us from truly listening and learn about small things you can do to stay present and focused during conversations.
What we’ll cover:
- The limitations of “active” listening
- Why multitasking doesn’t work
- How to quiet our minds and focus on the speaker
- Daily practices for staying in the moment
